SEG Special Commendation 2023

Mahmoud E. Hedefa is the recipient of Special Commendation in 2023, which recognizes deserving individuals for meritorious service to the public, scientific community, or profession. Hedefa is recognized for his many years and caliber in teaching and increasing SEG’s global impact. He earned a bachelor’s degree in geology in 1984. He is currently employed as a senior geophysical consultant at Saudi Aramco, with more than 30 years of diverse experience in onshore and offshore seismic data acquisition and processing. He is known for “hire-to-retire” career development support of geophysicists in the global geophysical community and especially for supporting SEG programs in the Middle East. Hedefa shares a patent for “Method, program product, and system for suppression of residual water bottom energy in surface seismic data” and published Shallow Drilling Hazards Predictions Using 3D Refraction Seismic Data, a guide for drilling engineers. Along with these specific accomplishments, he has fostered collaboration between SEG and the Dharan Geoscience Society, which culminated in the Near-Surface Modeling Workshop that attracted a global audience. As one nominator wrote, “Mahmoud has been and continues to be a true champion of SEG and the geophysical community. His energy, enthusiasm, and services with passion are supreme.”

Mahmoud E. Hedefa is the recipient of Special Commendation in 2023, established to recognize and commend individuals who have rendered meritorious service to the public, scientific community, or profession. He is acknowledged for his outstanding contributions as a mentor and educator, as well as for his efforts in expanding the global impact of SEG in the Middle East and North Africa. He currently holds the position of senior geophysical consultant at Saudi Aramco, where he has amassed more than 35 years of diverse experience in onshore and offshore seismic data imaging. Additionally, he serves as a career development advisor.

Throughout his career, Mahmoud has consistently fulfilled his job commitments, exceeding expectations in each role he has undertaken. His exceptional dependability, accuracy, and commitment to maintaining confidentiality are noteworthy. His strong leadership and effective communication skills have played a pivotal role in achieving team goals. Moreover, his compassionate nature has enabled him to prioritize both performance and the welfare of his colleagues. Furthermore, his adept handling of unexpected circumstances, such as the pandemic, has not only been valuable but crucial to the success of SEG in the Middle East.

Mahmoud is renowned for his unwavering support of geophysicists’ career development on a global scale, particularly in the Middle East, and for his contributions to SEG programs in the region. He holds a patent for the “Method, program product, and system for suppression of residual water bottom energy in surface seismic data” and has authored a guide for drilling engineers titled, Shallow Drilling Hazards Predictions Using 3D Refraction Seismic Data. In addition to these notable achievements, he has fostered collaboration between the Dharan Geoscience Society on near-surface modeling, which has garnered global recognition. In 2013, Mahmoud initiated a career professionals’ development roadmap for all geophysicists at Saudi Aramco that fostered a fruitful partnership between the Upstream Professional Development Center (UPDC) (Saudi Aramco) and SEG continuing education. He also joined the SEG Continuing Education Committee and has since become a valuable subject-matter expert, providing support in seismic data acquisition, processing, imaging, and land and marine applications.

Widely commended for his noble work in mentoring young geoscience students and supporting colleagues in different regions, Mahmoud spearheaded the organization of the first SEG International Student Day in the United Arab Emirates, a collaborative effort between SEG staff and himself. He also directed and sponsored the SEG Challenge Bowl in the Arabian Gulf regions, specifically in Bahrain and neighboring countries.

Mahmoud has delivered numerous geophysical technical presentations at conferences, spanning from Kuwait to Oman, as well as at the SEG annual meetings in the United States. Moreover, he has conducted various seismic processing courses at UPDC (Saudi Aramco), covering fundamental to advanced levels. Notably, he initiated the first annual Near-Surface Modeling Workshop in cooperation between the Dharan Geoscience Society and SEG that attracted more than 130 geoscientists from around the world.

Mahmoud has remained a devoted advocate of SEG and the geophysical community in the region, exemplifying incredible dedication and unwavering service. He actively promotes programs aimed at nurturing and empowering young individuals within the Aramco organization, extending his commitment beyond his professional life to include coaching soccer. Currently, Hedefa holds the esteemed position of Saudi Aramco Soccer Association president. His selflessness and passion for supporting young people make him truly deserving of this award.
