The age of rocks is determined by the presence of characteristic fossils, depositional events such as ash deposits, radioisotope dating (see Figure A-5), reversals of the Earth’s magnetic field (see Figure G-4), sequence stratigraphic patterns (see Figure S-5), etc. The relative age of rocks is determined by the rocks that are stratigraphically above and below them.
