Society of Exploration Geophysicists ITERA Student Chapter (SEG ITERA SC) is a dynamic and non-profit organization established in April 25th 2019 at the Sumatera Institute of Technology (ITERA). Under the guidance of our esteemed faculty advisor, Andri Yadi Paembonan, S.Si., M.Sc., we are dedicated to fostering a community of geophysical enthusiasts and students pursuing Geophysical Engineering. Our mission extends beyond the classroom, aiming to connect and empower students interested in the fascinating field of Geophysical Engineering.

At SEG ITERA SC, we prioritize both soft skills and hard skills development, creating a platform for students to enhance their expertise and contribute to the global discourse in geophysics. Through a diverse range of activities such as seminars, workshops, field trips, social initiatives, courses, and more, we strive to broaden our members' knowledge and impact. Our commitment is not only to the national geophysics arena but also to the global geophysics community. We have achieved numerous milestones in our brief existence, and we continue to push boundaries, providing our members with valuable opportunities for growth, collaboration, and professional development.

National Seminar of Mineral Exploration

Seminar

SEG ITERA SC successfully hosted a National Seminar with the theme "Geothermal: Energy Source for a Better Future" This event brought together experts in the field of geothermal energy to share their knowledge and insights with students, professionals, and the broader community.

The seminar highlighted the critical role of geothermal energy as a sustainable and renewable energy source, addressing its potential to contribute to global energy needs while reducing environmental impacts. Participants gained valuable insights into the latest technological advancements, challenges, and opportunities in geothermal exploration and development.

SEG ITERA SC Workshop

Course and Workshop

SEG ITERA SC has successfully organized a series of Courses and Workshops that cover diverse themes, ranging from oil and gas exploration, mining applications, to disaster mitigation strategies. These activities emphasize the crucial role of geophysics in addressing real-world challenges and advancing various industries.

Through expert-led sessions and interactive discussions, participants gained in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in topics such as seismic interpretation, resource exploration, and geophysical techniques for disaster preparedness.

Company Visit to PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy

These sessions served as a platform for exchanging ideas, sharing best practices, and discussing innovative approaches to student chapter management and activities. Through open dialogue and collaboration, participants gained valuable insights to enhance their respective organizations.

Company Visit

SEG ITERA SC organized a Company Visit to PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy, Ulubelu, providing members with a valuable opportunity to gain insights into the geothermal energy industry.

During the visit, participants explored various aspects of geothermal energy operations, including field management, energy production processes, and the role of geophysics in sustainable energy development. This experience allowed students to connect theoretical knowledge from the classroom with practical applications in the industry.

The visit not only enriched the participants' understanding of geothermal energy but also strengthened SEG ITERA SC's relationship with industry leaders, emphasizing its commitment to bridging the gap between academia and the professional world.

Student Competition

SEG ITERA SC actively encourages and supports its members in participating in student competitions at both national and international levels. These competitions serve as a platform for members to showcase their skills, apply their geophysical knowledge, and gain invaluable experience in a competitive environment.

The chapter provides continuous guidance and resources, from sharing information about upcoming competitions to facilitating mentorship and preparation for participants. Through this initiative, SEG ITERA SC aims to foster a spirit of excellence and inspire its members to achieve remarkable accomplishments.

Field Camp

SEG ITERA SC, in collaboration with the Geophysical Engineering program at the Sumatera Institute of technology (ITERA) [1], organized a Field Camp activity aimed at applying various geophysical methods to address local challenges in the Gunung Tiga District, Tanggamus Regency, Lampung. This event involved the application of geophysical techniques such as electrical resistivity, magnetic, gravity, and other methods to better understand subsurface characteristics and provide solutions to community issues.

Participants in this activity, including SEG ITERA SC members and Geophysical Engineering students from ITERA, not only honed their technical skills but also made direct contributions to the development of geophysical knowledge that can benefit the local community and the industry. Additionally, this event offered an opportunity for students to work in teams, improve their communication skills, and understand the challenges faced in geophysical field practices.

SEG Stories

SEG ITERA SC launched the SEG Stories initiative as an effort to introduce and raise awareness about geophysics and the activities of SEG members to audiences outside the geophysics field. This event aims to bridge the gap between geophysics students and the wider community, offering a platform for sharing the exciting and impactful aspects of geophysical work.

Through SEG Stories, members of SEG ITERA SC present real-life applications, challenges, and innovations in geophysics in a way that is engaging and understandable to non-geophysics students and the general public. By connecting with diverse audiences, this initiative fosters a greater appreciation for the relevance of geophysics in solving societal and environmental issues, while also promoting interdisciplinary collaboration.

EVOLVE 2024 - Carbon Solutions Program

SEG EVOLVE

SEG EVOLVE is a mentor-guided virtual internship that equips students with real-world experience in energy exploration and sustainability. Through multidisciplinary workflows, participants gain expertise in subsurface characterization, business management, and energy solutions.

International Petroleum Technology Conference 2025

International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC)

The IPTC program bridges the gap between academia and the energy industry, offering students firsthand exposure to industry practices and opportunities to connect with leading employers. Supported by SEG, AAPG, EAGE, and SPE, it inspires students to bring back valuable insights to their peers.

Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) Asia

The OTC Asia programme offers students valuable insight into the energy industry, enabling them to return to their universities with a positive experience to share. It also provides opportunities to engage with major industry employers seeking top talent from institutions around the world.

Outreach Programs

SEG in Action

In April 2024, SEG ITERA SC initiated SEG in Action a community-driven program aimed at providing relief to flood-affected individuals and students in Bandar Lampung. This program was organized as a response to the devastating impact of floods in the area, highlighting our commitment to social responsibility and community support.

Through collective efforts, we successfully raised funds from students, faculty members, and external donors. The donations were used to deliver essential supplies, including food, clothing, and school materials, directly to those in need.

SEG in Action reflects our dedication to making a meaningful impact beyond academics by fostering empathy and resilience within the community. It serves as a testament to how geophysics students can contribute to solving real-world problems and supporting local communities in times of need.

Disaster Mitigation

Disaster Mitigation

SEG ITERA SC conducted a Disaster Mitigation focused on educating the residents of Way Muli Village, Rajabasa, South Lampung, on disaster preparedness. This activity aimed to increase community awareness and readiness in facing potential future disasters, particularly in a region affected by the tsunami.

The program included educational sessions on disaster risk reduction, early warning systems, and safe evacuation procedures. Through interactive discussions and hands-on training, the villagers were empowered with practical knowledge to respond effectively to emergencies.

This initiative underscores SEG ITERA SC's commitment to applying geophysics expertise in fostering community resilience and safety, ensuring that disaster-prone areas are better equipped to handle future challenges.

Mangrove Restoration

Mangrove Restoration

In collaboration with the Lampung Government, SEG ITERA SC carried out a Mangrove Restoration initiative in Pesawaran Regency. This program involved planting mangrove trees along the coastline, aimed at rehabilitating degraded ecosystems and enhancing coastal resilience.

Mangroves play a crucial role in protecting coastal areas from erosion, mitigating the impacts of climate change, and supporting biodiversity. Through this activity, SEG ITERA SC contributed to environmental conservation while fostering awareness among members and the local community about the importance of preserving coastal ecosystems.

This initiative reflects SEG ITERA SC's dedication to sustainable practices and its commitment to creating long-term environmental impacts.
