The Student Geoscientific Society was established in June 2007 and incorporated under German law in May 2012. As a nonprofit society, SGS promotes knowledge about geoscientific topics and encourages close collaboration among students and professionals of the various geoscientific disciplines and adjacent fields of science.

The activities of SGS are based on the dedication of undergraduate and graduate students to the geosciences and to sharing our three guiding principles of leadership, community, and networking. Strong partnerships with the geoscientific coordination platform Geo.X, international and national geoscientific societies as well as best relations to contacts from industry and academia provide an excellent scientific and organizational framework for our projects.

We focus our projects on improving the range and quality of course offerings by organizing field camps and trips to national and international scientific conferences, hosting guest lectures of highly renowned geoscientists from all over the world and holding a library. In addition, we network university and high school students with young professionals and experienced geoscientists from industry and academia in order to spark interest in academic studies of our sciences and improve career opportunities for young geoscientists. SGS further supports students in Berlin and Potsdam in operating the first official Student Chapters of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) and the European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers (EAGE) in Germany.

If you are interested in our activities, have a closer look at our projects as well as the manifold ways to socialize with students and geoscientists from all over the world and to improve the overall quality of your academic studies by getting involved with the SGS vision.

SEG Best Student Chapter Award 2013

In 2013 SGS received the SEG Best Student Chapter Award for their student, professional and outreach programs.

SGS receives the SEG Best Student Chapter 2013 Award at the SEG Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas

"As SGS Chairman, I'm deeply moved by the honor the Society of Exploration Geophysicists has bestowed upon us for the first time ever in its long illustrious history. This award is the recognition of several years of exceptional voluntary work by our society and especially by our SEG Student Chapter in a challenging and all too often underachieving environment in Berlin and Potsdam. At the same time, it's a mandate for leadership to all SGS members to continue our efforts and be a role model for many students, projects, and societies all around the world." - Aurelian Roeser (SGS e.V. Chairman)

SEG SUMMIT Student Chapter

In 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 SGS reached the rank as SEG SUMMIT Student Chapter. In 2015, 24 out of 340 SEG Student Chapters worldwide achieved this top level.

SEG Student Chapter Wiki Champion Award 2015

SGS has been awarded as SEG Student Chapter Wiki Champion 2015

In 2015 SGS has been named the SEG Student Chapter Wiki Champion and is the first student chapter recipient of this award. We launched comprehensive student chapter pages complete with information about conferences, field camps, and awards of the chapter (e.g. the page you are reading right now). One of the Student Chapter goals were to catalog lessons learned while conducting geophysical surveys so other geoscientists can read what we learned to improve their own project designs. As lead author of the awarded articles, SGS member Lennart Brüning talks in the SEG Daily News of the 85th SEG Annual Meeting 2015 in New Orleans about the contributions and the experiences with the SEG Wiki.[1] On the 9th #SEGWikiChat in November 2015 SGS member Ramona Niemann and Lennart Brüning describe how the Student Chapter has been awarded the first Student Chapter Wiki Winner. Additional topics are the achievement of SUMMIT level 3 years in a row, and how to make it as a student and young professional in the field. Visit Muut to see the transcript for the chat.

Conference Trips

SGS conference trip Madrid, Spain 2015

The regular attendance of geoscientific conferences is the best opportunity for students and young professionals to inform themselves about recent developments in research and technology as well as to network with other students, experienced geoscientists and industry professionals from all over the world. In 2011, SGS started to organize joint student trips to international geoscientific conferences. Since then we made a lot of journeys to different conferences in many different countries. To read personal experiences about the trips please click here. In June 2015 SGS member Florian Motz recorded some impressions of the SGS conference trip to the 77th EAGE Conference & Exhibition which was held in Madrid. Please check it out on the right.
