National Observatory Greenstone Belt Geophysical Society
About Us
The National Observatory Greenstone Belt Geophysical Society Student Chapter was founded in 2015, became official in 2016 and since then has been actively participating with the collaboration of SEG and EAGE, which open doors for students to participate actively involved in projects and initiatives that promote geoscience, especially Geophysics.
Student Chapter Goals
The chapter has the mission of providing high-level lectures, theoretical and practical professional training courses using geoscientific software - open to all. In addition to opportunities for members of the chapter such as the possibility of publications, funds for congresses and fieldwork, as well as leadership programs for preparing for the job market and networking with professionals and students.

Activities
2021
In 2021, the chapter organized:
- the 1st Oil and Gas Summer School in partnership with other SEG's student chapters - at UFF and UERJ, support of the Brazilian Geophysical Society (SBGf) and SPE Brazil Section, and sponsored by Halliburton. The school was a 52-hour course for Brazilian geosciences undergraduate and graduate students that occurred in early 2021, attended by around 500 participants;
- a short course on the Madagascar software suite, with the participation of 20 students, co-organized with the Faculty of Geophysics of Federal University of Pará;
- the event in honor of the women's month, Women in Geosciences, organized in partnership with the chapters SEG Women's Network Brazil and SEG UERJ and with support from the Brazilian Geophysical Society (SBGf) e the NGO Cais Mentoria;
- the chat Scientific dissemination in times of pandemic with Katia Pinheiro, researcher at the National Observatory and coordinator of the MOSAIC Group, on scientific dissemination and the difficulties generated by the pandemic;
- the 2021 SEG Challenge Bowl Latin America Regional, with participation of 16 teams and presented by Peter Duncan. To prepare the students, we organized a chat with Peter Duncan before the event.
- the chat Researcher around the world with Leonardo Uieda, professor at the University of Liverpool, about his academic and professional trajectory, free software, academic careers, opportunities abroad and much more;
- the event Artificial Intelligence applied to Geosciences, composed by six lectures on AI applied to potential methods, seismic interpretation, Petrophysics, Seismology and Astronomy;
and participated at
- the organization of the First meeting of EAGE LATAM Student Chapters (1st ECE Latin America), in which EAGE student chapters in Latin America organize lectures on various topics related to geosciences;
- at the 2021 SEG/Chevron Student Leadership Symposium and at the Integrated Annual Conference and Exhibition - IMAGE'21, presenting the activities organized by the chapter in 2020 and 2021.
2020
In 2020, the chapter organized:
- the Women in Geophysics week, which brought together 8 lectures and 2 round tables with women working with geophysics in academia and industry;
- the GeoWebinar, a series of weekly lectures on geophysics, which had 10 lectures in 2020;
- two introductory short courses to the Python language:
- two virtual field trips, in the Serra do Rio dos Rastro (southern Brazil) and in Machu Picchu, Peru;
and participated at
- the organization of the 1st Latin American cycle of conferences on geosciences, in which SEG student chapters in Latin America organize weekly lectures on various topics related to geophysics;
- disclosure of 1st International Virtual Congress of Geology and Geophysics - CIVGEO 2020 and
- dissemination of the Cais Mentoria project, which provides free mentoring to young university students in peripheral regions of the country, connecting them to professionals in large centers.
