Biography

Donald Paul is the Executive Director of the Energy Institute and holds the William M. Keck Chair of Energy Resources at the University of Southern California. Major USC energy initiatives with industry and government include the Center for Smart Oil Field Technologies, the DOE Regional Smart Grid Demonstration Program, the Center for Energy Infomatics, and the recently formed programs on unconventional hydrocarbon resource development and cyber-physical security systems for energy infrastructures.

Dr. Paul had a distinguished 33-year career with the Chevron Corporation, retiring in June 2008 as Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. He advanced through positions of increasing responsibility in technology, exploration and production operations, and executive management, including appointment as the president of Chevron’s Canadian subsidiary. Dr. Paul currently serves as a Senior Advisor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington D.C. and in 2010, was appointed by the Secretary of Energy to the National Petroleum Council. He also participates in advisory roles at several universities (including MIT, Harvard, Rice, and the University of Texas), energy companies, and technology firms. The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) recently honored Dr. Paul with the 2011 Management and Information Award in recognition of his leading role in the advancement and integration of information technology in the industry.

He holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from MIT and an honorary doctorate from the Colorado School of Mines.[1]

Donald (Don) L. Paul is corporate vice-president, Technology and Environmental Affairs, for Chevron. He is responsible for coordinating the work of Chevron's research and technology companies and accelerating the development and application of competitive technology throughout the company's worldwide activities. He is the corporate reporting officer for Chevron's three technology companies-Chevron Petroleum Technology Company (CPTC), Chevron Research and Technology Company (CRTC) and Chevron Information Technology Company (CITC), as well as Chevron's worldwide health, safety, and environmental compliance function.

He received a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics, a master's in geology and geophysics, and a Ph.D. in geophysics from MIT. He joined Chevron in 1975 as a research geophysicist. In 1978, he transferred to Houston as part of a joint project between Chevron and Western Geophysical. In 1979, he transferred to Chevron U.S.A. Inc. (CUSA) in New Orleans to work in Gulf of Mexico exploration operations. After a temporary assignment on corporate staff in 1982, he became geophysics manager for CUSA's Rocky Mountain Exploration Division in Denver.

Following the Chevron/ Gulf merger in 1985, Don returned to COFRC as manager of geophysics R&D. In 1990, he was named COFRC's vice president for exploration research. COFRC was one of five technical organizations that were combined to form CPTC during the 1992 restructuring, and Don was named president of CPTC, headquartered in Houston, in August of that year.

In November 1994, he was named president of Chevron Canada Resources Limited, headquartered in Calgary. He assumed his current position on 1 September 1996. Don also served on the board of directors of Dyegy Incorporated (formerly known as NGC Corporation), an affiliate of Chevron, from 1996 to 1998. He was co-leader of the Chevron team which executed the merger between NGC and Chevron's natural gas business unit and Tulsabased Warren Petroleum Company in 1996.

Don is a member of SEG, AAPG, the American Geological Institute Foundation, and the Industrial Research Institute. He serves on advisory boards for Stanford University and MIT. He is a member of the Federal Panel on Energy R&D, which reports to the President's Committee on Science and Technology, and a former member of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Science.
