(tom’ s∂n) Scattering of electromagnetic radiation by free or loosely bound charged particles. The transverse electric field of the radiation accelerates the charged particles which then re-radiate the energy removed from the primary radiation. A non-relativistic interaction. Named for Joseph John Thomson (1856–1940), British physicist.
