Dictionary:Stoneley wave

(stōn’ lē) 1. A type of seismic wave propagated along an interface. A Stoneley wave is always possible at solid-fluid interfaces and under very restricted conditions at solid-solid interfaces. See Sheriff and Geldart (1995, 53–54, 133, 489). 2. A surface wave in a borehole; see acoustic wave. Stoneley-wave attenuation is sensitive to formation permeability. Named for Robert Stoneley (1894-1976), English seismologist.
