Dictionary:Potential function

Mathematical relation from which other relations can be derived by simple mathematical operations (such as differentiation). For example, the gradient of a magnetic or gravity potential function might give the magnetic or gravity field, or the divergence and curl of a seismic potential function might give the displacements involved in P- and S-waves. Potentials are used because they are often easier to describe than the relations that can be derived from them.
