David (Dave) Carlson has been in the oil industry since 1980 as a research software developer and held various research and management positions in oil exploration companies and service companies. He was an adjunct professor of Geophysics at the University of Houston 1986–1995, teaching evening classes on the inversion of seismic data. He received his BS in mathematics at Carnegie Mellon University in 1965 and his PhD in mathematics at Case Western Reserve University, 1969. Before becoming a geophysicist he was a mathematics professor at the University of Missouri from 1969–1980.
The main emphasis of his activity for the last decade has been in dual sensor acquisition and processing techniques. Earlier work (late 1980s) also included broadband (over/under) acquisition and processing techniques.
He retired from Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) in 2013 as Principal Research Geophysicist. In 2014, he attended and presented talks at the SEG Summer Workshop on Broadband Seismic Technology and the EAGE/SBGf Workshop on Broadband Seismic.
He is a member of SEG and EAGE. He serves on the SEG Continuation Education Committee (Chairman 2007-–2008 and 2008–2009) and is a member of the Geophysical Society of Houston (Spring Symposium General Chairman, 2010 and First Vice President, 2010–2011).
