Who All SEG members and participants at the Annual Meeting, regardless of wiki experience
Location Room Deck 708, Colorado Convention Center
Time 12 – 2pm AND 5 – 6pm October 26-29

The 2nd Annual SEG Wikithon was held 12-2pm and 5-6pm October 26-29 in Denver, CO during the SEG International Exposition and 84th Annual Meeting. This wiki page will archive the information from the event.

The SEG Wikithon is an open-house event during which SEG members and staff will connect to refine and launch content around a focused geophysics-related theme(s). That theme(s) will be determined by the SEG Online Technical Content Board and you, using this page. Propose tutorials you would like to see covered during the event to the schedule below. See you next year in New Orleans!

Exercises during Wikithon 2014

Creating your own profile

  1. Add user page to the SEG Wiki
    1. To access your user page, first make sure to login to SEG's single sign-on system (SSO) using your login credentials
    2. Then, visit your user page
    3. Add your own personal information under each category
    4. For a strong example of a user page, check out the user page of Elizabeth Warren, journals production editor for GEOPHYSICS and Interpretation.
  2. Tip: Copy source code from Andrew’s sandbox, and paste to your own user page

Information can include:

  • Companies and professional affiliations
  • Expertise, topics of interest
  • One question about the wiki
  • One new page idea for the wiki
  • A photo (if you'd like)

Pages needing attention

Biographies

Many of the biographies of SEG pioneers are in need of polishing. This includes help with -

  • Spacing
  • Adding information to the infobox (box that appears in the top right of the page)
  • Combine biography sections that repeat content, remove repeating content
  • Add direct links to SEG library of articles and publications mentioned in bio
  • Clean up paragraphs as necessary, this includes making lists, removing references from section titles, etc.

Below are examples of pages that we believe are strong entries to follow as examples.

Stubs

A stub is an article containing only a few sentences of text which is too short to provide encyclopedic coverage of a subject. Help us grow the wiki by expanding short articles here.

FAQ

What is a wikithon?
A wikithon is a physical gathering of like-minded people joining to advance individual articles and, in so doing, the shared community asset that is the SEG Wiki. It is purposefully designed to be a participant-driven meeting. Specifically, the goal of the 2014 wikithon is to connect those passionate about the science of applied geophysics, provide the necessary tools to make lasting contributions, and advance the mission of SEG. In addition, we will help you get better acquainted with the wiki, provide examples of the wiki helping you, and gather your own ideas for the future of the wiki.
Who can attend the wikithon?
All SEG members and participants at the Annual Meeting, regardless of wiki experience, are welcome to attend. This includes students, members, and all participants attending the Annual Meeting. As Isaac mentioned at the top of the chat, starting on Thursday, all registered users will be able to edit the wiki. And do not worry, if you are not registered, we can walk you through that as well!
In addition this year, we will host a student-focused wikthon at the Student Pavilion on Monday, October 27 from 3-4pm and on Tuesday, October 28 from 12-2pm. Students are welcome to attend both wikithons.
What can I expect when I get to the wikithon?
We will have two different areas set up for participants. One area will be for those new to the wiki, those who would like a refresher, or need more personalized attention to get started. The other area will be for those more comfortable making edits. These folks will focus on adding content, improving the wiki, or whatever the group decides is worthy of pursuing, that’s the idea of a participant-led agenda. Experienced wiki contributors, like Matt Hall, will be dropping in on the event. SEG Wiki staff will always be around, assisting the whole room. Please bring a laptop and we will provide the refreshments!
What do you hope to achieve at the wikithon?
Going back to the goal, we want to provide a place to connect those passionate about the science of applied geophysics. We want attendees to leave having the tools to make lasting contributions in the wiki and be better focused on advancing the mission of SEG.
Specifically, we hope to improve the wiki through some general gardening, fixing typos and improving grammar, and by improving the linking, via cross-linking SEG wiki entries, adding categories and connecting to relevant external links, etc. Our amazing volunteer, John W. Stockwell, Jr., has added hundreds of pages, but some of those pages need a little polishing so that they are consist with one another, as they have come from different sources. In addition, refining references to increase credibility, improving figures and diagrams, and adding images is needed.
Additionally, our Online Committee has come up with a list of six content areas to explore: documenting open datasets, the basics of seismic interpretation, the basic equations of geophysics, summaries of classic papers (e.g. most cited papers in Geophysics and TLE), microseismic, and borehole geophysics.
