A wavelet’s sharpness depends on its phase spectrum as well as on its amplitude spectrum. For a given amplitude spectrum, the greatest sharpness occurs when the phase spectrum is zero — that is, when the wavelet is zero phase. In summary, an interpreter wavelet should have a broad amplitude spectrum and a zero-phase spectrum. Such a wavelet is symmetric and damps with the greatest degree of rapidity that is consistent with its amplitude spectrum.
