A standard rectangular map grid. The projection is onto a cylinder tangent to the Earth along a central meridian (i.e., with the cylinder axis perpendicular to the Earth’s axis). See Figure M-4 and Mercator Projection. The Earth is divided into 60 north-south columns, each 6° of longitude wide. The central meridian is assigned the value of 500 000 m easting and the equator a northing of 0 in the Northern Hemisphere and 10 000 000 m in the Southern Hemisphere.
