The first of NASA’s EOS spacecraft was launched early in the year 2000. It carries five remote sensing instruments especially to cover land areas. The MODIS and ASTER instruments on this spacecraft will probably be most used by the geophysical community. Two other EOS spacecraft with instruments of superior characteristics for studying the hydrosphere and the atmosphere were to be launched in 2000 and 2001.
