A common prestack imaging principle is that only the wavefield at zero time could have reflected from a reflector immediately at a given point. Claerbout (1971) explained the imaging principle as, ‘‘reflectors exist at points in the ground where the first arrival of the downgoing wave is time-coincident with an upgoing wave.’’
