(gī g∂r mūl’ ∂r) A radiation detector primarily sensitive to β-rays. The ions that result from radiation that enters the chamber through a mica window are collected on an axial anode wire and a surrounding cylindrical cathode. Named for Hans Geiger (1882–1945) and W. Mueller, German physicists.
