{{#category_index:D|dielectric log}} A class of high-frequency, electric-logging sondes that operate at a single frequency in the MHz to low GHz range to measure formation effects of phase-shift, amplitude, and attenuation on a transmitted electromagnetic wave. Phase shift, related to dielectric permittivity, is treated as propagation time, tp, a quantity virtually independent of salinity for water but significantly lower than for oil, gas, or rock materials. If the lithology is known, tp (corrected for attenuation) may allow porosity determination. The dielectric log offers a means to calculate residual hydrocarbon saturation in the shallow flushed zone.
