5. Explain the following: The wavelet created by the source is called the signature. As this wavelet travels into the earth, two things happen. First, its overall amplitude decays because of wavefront divergence. Second, frequencies are attenuated because of the absorption effects of rocks. At any given time, the wavelet is not the same as it was at the onset of source excitation. A compensation usually is applied before deconvolution. Wavefront divergence is removed by applying a spherical spreading function. Inverse Q-filtering compensates for frequency attenuation.
