Used to flash time of shot to observers and for communication voice or code. The “Ticks” from the ship's chronometer were picked up by a microphone button and broadcast by the shooter's radio. The observer's radio picked up the sound and put it as blips on the seismic record. Time markers did vary and this enabled the seismologist to reduce all travel times to the same base. Dry holes are known to have been saved by this.
