Filter cake, the residue deposited on the borehole wall as the mud loses filtrate (the liquid portion of mud) into porous, permeable formations. The mud cake (average thickness of from a half to a few centimeters) generally has very low permeability and hence retards further loss of fluid to the formation. See invaded zone.
