The path between two points that takes the least time to traverse, subject to certain constraints; the path a seismic ray takes according to Fermat’s principle (q.v.) (although Fermat’s principle dictates an extremum path, which may not be the least-time path). Also called minimum-time path or brachistochrone. The raypath will generally be curved or bent because of velocity variations.
