A metal-to-electrolyte contact at which no charge crosses the interface. As charge accumulates, the electrode interface behaves like a capacitor without leakage. No chemical reaction takes place and there is no exchange current or faradaic process. This condition is approximated when high-overvoltage, nonreactive metals are at equilibrium with an electrolyte.
