(lih-nucks with a short ‘‘i’’) A C-compatible version of UNIX (q.v.) operating system, devised by Linus Torvalds, a Finnish student at the University of Helsinki. The operating system including source code can be downloaded from the internet at no cost. Linux makes use of components developed by Free Software Foundation for the GNU project and is available on many non-PC platforms as well.
