Another convention uses the second finger to indicate the direction of positive current flow (which is opposite to the direction of electron flow), in which case the right hand is used for generators and the left hand for motors. There are other variations of these rules. The right hand can also be used for the vector cross-product convention A×B=C: the thumb A crossed with the index finger B gives the resultant middle-finger direction C.
