The SEG CICESE Student Chapter was created in 2016 by MSc students from The Ensenada Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education in Ensenada, Baja California, México. Our mission is to act as a representative entity that promotes the activities carried out by the SEG to contribute to the development of Earth Sciences' students. Our vision is to be a more solid student organization by promoting the active participation of graduate students in Earth Sciences in the different activities and projects.

Applied Geophysics Summer School SEG-CICESE 2023

The Applied Geophysics Summer School SEG-CICESE 2023 was sponsored by SEG Foundation through SEG Field Camp Grant and Cordillera Geo-Services. It consisted of a two-week full-immersion geophysical project carried out from August 14th to August 25th, which started from theory to practice in order to characterize the San Quintín Volcanic Field (SQVF), Baja California, Mexico.

The project provided a hands-on experience to Earth Sciences students: 12 under-graduated students (from 7 different universities in Mexico) and 3 M.Sc. students (from CICESE). Students acquired, processed, and analyzed five sorts of geophysical data (electrical, magnetotelluric, seismic refraction, MASW and seismic noise).

Main goals

  • Understand the geology and volcanic history of the SQVF, which has important implications for natural resource management, hazard mitigation, and public safety by obtaining various subsurface geophysical models.
  • Produce models of the volcanic subsurface structures.
  • Enhance the students knowledge, bringing them a hands-on experience acquiring, processing and analyzing five different sorts of geophysical data.

From theory to practice

The students attended a theoretical course for each method, ranging from the physical principle to the processing and interpretation of the data. After that, they had three days of work field, four days of data processing (including inversion) and a day to present their results.

Results

  • Students collected, processed and interpreted data 6 MT soundings, 6 seismic noise stations, 3 seismic lines (Refraction and MASW), and 3 ERT profiles.
  • From seismic and electric methods (used in the southern part of the study area), students identified two structures considered to be lava flows from volcanoes which lie beneath a sediment layer at depths of 10 to 15 meters.
  • Results obtained from MT soundings revealed structures related to the volcanoes at greater depths.

Applied Geophysics Summer School SEG-CICESE 2022

The Applied Geophysics Summer School SEG-CICESE 2022 was sponsored by SEG Foundation through SEG Field Camp Grant and Cordillera Geo-Services. It consisted of a two-week full-immersion geophysical project (15th August 2021-16th August 2021) from theory to practice to image the subsurface of a portion of the "La Misión" aquifer in Ensenada, Baja California, México.

This year participated 10 under-gradiated students from different universities in Mexico and 2 civil protection personnel. of Chiapas, Mexico.

All participant acquired, processed, and analyzed four sort of geophysical data (Electrical resistivity tomography, transient electromagnetic sounding, seismic refraction and heat flow data.)

Main goals

  • Enhance the student's knowledge, bringing them an experience beyond regular indoor classes through total immersion into a typical day in the field with the equipment and unexpected outcomes.
  • Update the underground model of the aquifer "La Misión" and contribute to scientific knowledge of groundwater resources by applying geophysical methods (electrical, seismic, electromagnetic and heat flow data).
  • Integrate geophysical results with the geological framework of the study area.
2022 Study area, La Mision Valley, Ensenada, Baja California, México

Results

  • Students processed and interpreted data from 4 geophysical techniques employing commercial and educational software developed by researchers from CICESE.
  • Each team elaborated a technical report and showed their results in a final presentation.
  • According to their results, there is a saturated-water layer under 25 m depth in the study area.
  • All participants developed hard and soft skills, such as teamwork, good communication, geophysical data acquisition, and processing software.

Applied Geophysics Summer School SEG-CICESE 2021

The Applied Geophysics Summer School SEG-CICESE 2021 was sponsored by SEG Foundation through SEG Field Camp Grant. It consisted of a two-week full-immersion geophysical project (23rd August 2021-3rd September 2021) from theory to practice to characterize a portion of the aquifer in the Ojos Negros Valley in Ensenada, Baja California, México.

This project provides a hands-on experience to Earth Sciences students: 9 under-graduated students(from 7 different universities in México), 2 M.Sc. students, and 1 PhD. student (from CICESE).

This summer, students acquired, processed, and analyzed four sorts of geophysical data (ERT, audio magnetotelluric, seismic refraction, and seismic noise).

Study area location of the Applied Geophysics Summer School SEG-CICESE 2021.

Main objectives

  • Obtain an updated subsoil model using different geophysical techniques to assess the current groundwater availability, which has been affected in the last decades.
  • Enhance the students' knowledge, bringing them an experience beyond regular indoor classes through full immersion into a typical day in the field with the equipment and unexpected outcomes.

From theory to practice

Students assisted to three days of theoretical courses (electric, electromagnetic and seismic methods), three days of work field (ERT, AMT, refraction, and noise seismic), four days of data processing (including joint inversion) and a day to present their results.

Results

  • Students collected, processed, and interpreted 5 AMT soundings, 3 seismic profiles (refraction and MASW), and 3 ERT. Also, they performed a joint inversion with ERT+Seismic refraction data. They used software made by researchers from CICESE for AMT, ERT, and joint inversion; for seismic data, they used commercial software "SeisImager".
  • Each team showed their results in a final presentation and elaborated a final report. According to their results, there is a saturated water layer between 10-20 m depth in the study area.
  • All participants developed hard and soft skills, such as teamwork, good communication, geophysical data acquisition, and processing software.
