Obituary April 2020

By [Katie Burke]

It is with deep sadness the SEG Foundation learned that our fellow friend and colleague, Rodney Cottrell, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2020 at the age of 85. Rod worked as a geophysicist, specializing in offshore exploration in the Gulf of Mexico. At retirement he was vice-president of Walter Oil & Gas in Houston, Texas. Rod is survived by his wife Ann West, and his loving family.

Rod became a member of the SEG in 1963, and joined the SEG Foundation Trustee Associates in 1990. For more than 40 years, he was a devoted annual supporter to the Foundation’s programs and activities. Rod genuinely believed in supporting our next generation of geophysicists, and showed this through his generosity to the Scholarships program.

Rod was full of energy and life. I first met him and Ann in 2007, during an annual meeting of the SEG Foundation Trustee Associates in San Antonio, Texas. This 3-day excursion included adventures such as a river boat tour with dinner, vineyard tours, and a walking tour of the homes in the historic district, including The Guenther House. Being relatively new to SEG at that time, I was graciously welcomed to the Foundation family by Rod and Ann (as well as many others) with open arms. I will forever be grateful for the kindness they showed me then, and throughout the years.

The family has advised that no celebration of life services will be held at this time. However, please join me in offering sincere condolences to Ann and the Cottrell family in their time of loss. Rod will be greatly missed by many.
