King Abdullah University of Science and Technology Student Chapter
Society of Exploration Geophysicists King Abdullah University of Science and Technology Student Chapter (SEG KAUST SC) is an active Student Chapter located in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia. SEG KAUST SC was established in 2011. In the beginning, the main activity of SEG KAUST SC was a course sponsored by SEG. KAUST SC fulfills their mission by:
- providing students the opportunity to develop and improve leadership skills, management skills and increase networking opportunities,
- conducting continuous education activities to enhance and strengthen geophysical skills,
- enhancing the sense of professionalism by actively running an organization and networking with other students and professionals.

Honorary Lecture 2018
A course to give information and knowledge to all of the geophysics students in King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and around Thuwal about the global current issues in geophysical exploration. The lecturers were invited from SEG professionals. In 2018, the SEG Honorary Lecturer Maria Angela Capello delivered a briefing about the SEG's Women Network Committee, an initiative launched to empower the participation and success of women in Geophysics around the Globe.
SEG Iftar 2021
A social event intended to celebrate the holy month of Ramadan as well as communicate the end-year report.
Honorary Lecture 2021
A course to give information and knowledge to all of the geophysics students in King Abdullah University of Science and Technology about the role and advances in rock physics for geophysical exploration. The lecturers were invited from SEG professionals. In 2021, the SEG Honorary Lecturer Jack Dvorkin gave the lecture virtually. We held a meeting to accommodate discussion and a Q&A session.
SEG Quiz Night 2021
In partial collaboration with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) KAUST Student Chapter, this full of joy and scientific riddles attracted dozens of graduate students across engineering and science at KAUST.
On 10th Sept 2021, KAUST SEG Student Chapter organized Friday brunch to “Welcome new members to the SEG family”. The occasion created a friendly, ice-breaking atmosphere among the graduate students. New contacts and connections have been well-established among the new members. During the event we also organized a farewell breakfast for our former SEG student chapter president Teyyuba Adigozalova. Deliberations and discussions were made about the selection of a new board and other upcoming activities.
SEG Software Mastery 2022
In 2022, the chapter introduced program which aims to assist KAUST's Earth Science and Petroleum Engineering students in mastering their software skills. The program was initiated to also prepare KAUST's team who are participating to the 2022 AAPG Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) and the 2022 SEG EVOLVE. Depicted in the picture is the fun engagement between the students and their mentor (Andika Perbawa).
SEG Challenge Bowl 2021
During the 2021 SEG Challenge Competition, KAUST received the 1st Place on Middle East and Africe Stage. The team comprising of two students represented KAUST. Team members included: Mohammad H. Taufik (PhD in ErSE) and Fransktein Arphan (MSc in ERPE).
SEG EVOLVE 2020
During the 2020 SEG EVOLVE Competition, KAUST received the three categories at the SEG EVOLVE 2020 program: Best Investment Opportunity in Eugene Island, GOM, Best Map – Kingdom, and Easiest To Work With team. The team comprising of four students and Faculty represented KAUST as one of the 25 teams selected from around the world. Team members included: Teyyuba Adigozalova- Team lead and Petrophysicist (MSc in ERPE), Indra Arifianto- Geologist/Geophysicist (Ph.D. in ErSE), Andika Perbawa-Geophysicist Mentor (Ph.D. in ErSE), Elmir Abilov- Reservoir Engineer (MSc in ERPE), and Professor Abdulkader M. Alafifi- Faculty Advisor. According to the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) website, the “SEG EVOLVE Program prepares next generation E&P professionals to embrace digital technologies for project workflows. EVOLVE offers a direct experience in conducting multi-discipline subsurface integration projects using actual seismic, geological and wellbore data.”
SEG Challenge Bowl 2018
