SEG Best Paper in Geophysics Award 1971

John D. Marr received the 1971 SEG Best Paper in Geophysicists Award for his three papers Seismic stratigraphic exploration, Part, I, II, and II[1], [2][3]

John D. Marr received his B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of Colorado in 1926, the M.Sc. degree in geology in 1931, and the D.Sc. degree in geophysics in 1932 from the Colorado School of Mines. He has been actively engaged in geophysics and geology since 1927 when he started in surface geology. In 1931-32, he was an instructor of geology, Colorado School of Mines; in 1933-36, computer and party chief, Independent Exploration Company; in 1936-37, division geophysicist, Tidewater Oil Company, Houston. He joined Seismic Explorations, Inc. as a supervisor in 1937 and was vice-president 1949 to December 1962, when S.E.I. was sold to Mandrel Industries, Inc., Houston. He joined the Ray Geophysical Division of mandrel Industries in 1964 and manager of data processing and interpretation for Ray Geophysical. He retired from Mandrel in December 1966 and opened an office in Houston, Texas as a petroleum exploration consultant.

He is an active member of SEG, AAPG, AIME, and the local Houston societies, a fellow of the GSA, a register professional engineer in Texas, and a certified petroleum geologist.
