Guanquan Zhang received a B.S. (1961) from the University of Moscow, Russia. Since 1961, he has been conducting research on computational mathematics in several institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), including the Institute of Computing Technology in 1961–1978, the Computing Center in 1979–1995, the Institute of Computational Mathematics and Scientific/Engineering Computing in 1996–1999, and the Academy of Mathematics and System Sciences since 1999. Since 1986, Zhang has been a professor of research at CAS and has served as an editorial board member of the Chinese Journal of Numerical Mathematics and Applications, vice editor in chief of the Journal of Computational Mathematics, and associate editor of the Journal of Computational Physics. His research interests are in computational problems arising in the solution of PDEs, inverse problems, and problems in seismic migration and inversion.
