Douglas W. Oldenburg is a professor of geophysics at the University of British Columbia, specializing in electromagnetic geophysics and inverse theory. Among his many academic accolades, Dr. Oldenburg was awarded SEG Honorary Membership in 2001.

Biography 2014 [1]

Dr. Oldenburg received his B.Sc. (1967) University of Alberta, his M.Sc. (1969) University of Alberta, and his Ph.D. in (1974) at the University of California, San Diego. Oldenburg was the Killam Posdoctoral Fellow, University of Alberta from (1974-75). He was a Research Associate, University of Alberta in (1976) and has been a full faculty member at UBC since 1977. He has served as Director of the UBC Geophysical Inversion Facility since 1989.

Dr. Oldenburg's research interests include the development and application of geophysical inversion methodologies to solve applied problems in resource exploration, environmental or engineering problems. Research projects are carried out through the UBC Geophysical Inversion Facility and most projects involve extensive interaction with industry.

Current major topics include:

(1) 3D Forward Modelling and Inversion of Electromagnetic Data, (MITEM consortium).
(2) UXO (Unexploded Ordnance) detection and discrimination.
(3) 3D inversion of gravity, magnetics, DC resisitivity, Induced Polarization, and Magnetometric Resistivity data.
(4) Development of techniques to incorporate geologic information into geophysical inversions.
(5) Application of current inversion tools in mineral exploration and environmental problems.[2]

Honorable Mention (Geophysics) 1994

D. Oldenburg and Yaoguo Li received 1994 Honorable Mention (Geophysics) for their paper Inversion of induced polarization data.[3]
