If the medium is dispersive (i.e., if the speed depends on frequency), individual wave crests move with a velocity different from that with which the energy moves; the former is phase velocity, the latter group velocity. Phase and ray (group) velocity may also differ because of anisotropy; see anisotropy (seismic).
