The ratio of horizontal to vertical electric fields. In some cases only the modulus is considered (see polarization ellipse). In an electromagnetic method using VLF and higher-frequency radio waves, the apparent resistivity of the earth is calculated from measurements of the quadrature component of the electric wave tilt; for a horizontally layered earth, the results are equivalent to a magnetotelluric measurement made at the same frequency.
