1. The use of a vertical scale which is larger than the horizontal scale. Exaggeration makes subtle effects more evident but distorts structural relationships. Seismic time sections involve variable vertical exaggeration because the velocity varies with depth. The picking and interpretation of significant features on record sections is greatly affected by vertical exaggeration. See compressed section and Figure V-9. 2.
