Originated at Bell Laboratories in 1969; trademark UNIX is owned by The Open Group, an industry standards organization. UNIX has evolved in a variety of versions: Solaris is an operating environment developed by Sun Microsystems to run on Sun’s SPARC workstations, IRIX is an operating system developed by SGI, Silicon Graphics, AIX is an open operating system from IBM, and systems from other companies.
