Dictionary:Rms error (σ)

The square root of the average of the squares of the differences between a series of $n$ measurements $m_{i}$, and their mean ${\bar {m}}$. The rms error

$\sigma ={\sqrt {\frac {\sum (m_{i}-{\bar {m}})^{2}}{n}}}$;

also called the standard deviation. For a normal distribution, 0.683 of the population has less than the rms error. See statistical measures.
