1. The effective permeability divided by the absolute permeability. When a rock contains more than one fluid, relative permeability is used to express the permeability of the rock to each fluid. Since various phases inhibit the flow of each other, the sum of the relative permeabilities of all phases present is less than unity. 2. Relative magnetic permeability (q.v.).
