{{#category_index:R|reflection tomography}} A method for finding the velocity and/or reflectivity distribution from observations of reflection events at various locations and source-receiver offsets. The sources are assumed to be at the source image locations, and reflection times (and sometimes amplitudes) are calculated by tracing rays through a model consisting of a multitude of cells, each having constant velocity (and constant attenuation), and the results are compared with observed times (and amplitudes). The model is then perturbed and the process repeated iteratively to minimize the errors. See tomography and Dyer and Worthington (1988).
