# Dictionary:Propagation constant

${\displaystyle k^{2}=\mu \varepsilon \omega ^{2}+i\mu \sigma \omega }$ ,
where ${\displaystyle \mu }$ is magnetic permeability, ${\displaystyle \varepsilon }$ is dielectric permittivity, ${\displaystyle \omega }$ is angular frequency, and ${\displaystyle \sigma }$ is electrical conductivity. Sometimes ${\displaystyle \gamma =ik}$ is called the propagation constant. Also sometimes called wavenumber.
