1. A singular point, where the value of a function becomes infinite. If a function has the factor (x–a)m. a is a pole of order m. If m=1. a is a simple pole. 2. A magnetic pole (q.v.). 3. One electrode of a pair whose companion electrode (infinite electrode) is so far away that its location does not affect the measurements.
