{{#category_index:P|polarization filtering}} 1. A technique for enhancing one mode of propagation with respect to another, or of determining the direction of approach of a seismic wave by combining the outputs of three-component recordings. The different phase relationships for P-, S-, and surface waves can be used to distinguish between them. See White (1964) and Sheriff and Geldart (1995, 480, 483). 2. See linear-phase filtering.
