Having wavefronts that are planar (with no curvature), as might originate from a very distant source. A common assumption in seismic and electro-magnetic wave analyses that is only rarely true in actual situations. A plane wave can be expressed as

where l, m, n are the direction cosines giving the wave direction, V is the velocity of the wave, and t is time.
