1. A technique in which a signal of almost constant frequency is generated within an instrument and brought to the same average phase as an external signal. Used as the reference signal in synchronous detectors to suppress noise. Implies a smoothing time constant that is approximately the inverse of the bandwidth. 2. A narrow-band method of detecting a signal that is coherent with a reference signal.
