A measurement made on profiles across potential-field (especially magnetic) anomalies, with the objective of determining the depth of an anomalous mass (magnetized body). Peters’ rule gives the depth as the Peter’s length (horizontal distance between the points on the side of an anomaly where the slope is half of the maximum slope) divided by the Peters’ index (0.8–1.0 for vertical thin sheet, 1.0 for horizontal thin sheet, 1.6 for thick sheet, 1.8–2.0 for wide body or contact, default often 1.6).
