The use of reversals of the Earth’s magnetic field to determine stratigraphic age, or the use of the orientation of remanent magnetism to determine polar wandering curves and hence paleolatitudes. Occasionally includes identifying stratigraphic units on the basis of magnetic characteristics such as susceptibility. See Figures G-4 and S-5.
