A curved line in a 3D potential field such that a tangent anywhere along the line is in the direction of the force on a charge (pole, mass, etc.) if placed at that location. The line is perpendicular to every equipotential surface. The density of lines of force is called the flux density or field strength. A concept used in connection with electric fields, magnetic fields, gravitational fields, etc. See field intensity.
