(lāt’ ∂n sē) Access time, the time delay between successive communications. Latency is caused by propagation delays and the queuing of disks or tapes. For a disk, the time to move the disk arm (seek latency) plus the time waiting for the desired data to pass the head (rotational latency). See also access time.
