First law: The vector sum of all currents into any junction point is zero. Second law: The vector sum of all voltages around a closed loop is zero. Kirchhoff’s laws apply to three-dimensional materials such as earth as well as to conventional electrical circuits. Named for Gustav Robert Kirchhoff (1824–1887), German physicist.
