A radiation detector. Radiation entering through the thin metal walls of a chamber ionizes the gas in the chamber. The ions are collected on the walls and an axial anode rod maintained at a few hundred volts with respect to the walls. The chamber is usually filled with a cadmium or boron compound (or the walls are coated with such a compound) to increase the ionization efficiency.
