{{#category_index:I|image ray}} The least-time raypath from a diffracting point to the Earth’s surface. The raypath is perpendicular to the surface (if there is no anisotropy) and thereafter the ray obeys Snell’s law. The terminus of the ray after tracing through a velocity model locates the diffractor or reflector in the presence of lateral velocity changes. Used in depth migration where lateral velocity changes are present. See Hubral and Krey (1980, 106–116).
