{{#category_index:H|hot-wire analyzer}} A device used to detect hydrocarbon gases returned to the surface by the drilling mud. Basically a Wheatstone bridge, two arms of which are kept at a high temperature. Hydrocarbon gases become oxidized as they pass over one arm, which increases its temperature, changes its resistance, and unbalances the bridge. Hot-wire analyzer response is usually plotted in well log format and called a mud log (q.v.).
